How they work:

The vaccine tells your body how to make a harmless spike protein like the protein found on the virus. Your body starts building antibodies that know now how to fight the real virus if you come in contact with it. The vaccine cannot give you covid-19.

Vaccine safety:

Health Canada has approved the vaccines after independent and thorough scientific reviews for safety, efficacy and quality. Health Canada has one of the most rigorous scientific review systems in the world.

Most common side effects of the vaccine:

A sore arm at the injection site; tiredness, chills, headache and/or a slight fever

These side effects are temporary and are a good sign as it indicates that your immune system is paying attention and working to produce protection. Even if you do not experience any side effects, experts say that you will still be protected

Severe allergic reaction:

Severe reactions are rare. They include – hives, swelling of the face or mouth, difficulty breathing (anaphylactic)

They usually occur shortly after the injection is given.

This is why every person who gets the vaccine must wait for 15-20 minutes after the vaccine is given.

The benefits of the vaccine:

A vaccine is the only foreseeable way to end the covid -19 pandemic. The pandemic will not end until the majority of Canadians get vaccinated. All vaccines approved in Canada have shown to be effective in stopping severe disease, hospitalization and death.

You can protect yourself, your family, the people you support and the community by getting vaccinated.
